Getting Started

Hi everyone, I'm Alice and I've started writing this blog here to record some of my experiences at Uni in Newcastle, hopefully you'll find it interesting and maybe even funny! Its just a bit of fun and I'll try and update when I have something interesting to say, this isn't Twitter afterall..
5 months ago I left my small village in Leicestershire to begin my student life at Northumbria in Newcastle.

5 rules to survive your first week in the toon:

  1. Find out what 'The Toon' means, people will refer to this a lot.
  2. Bring warm clothes.
  3. NEVER mention the cold to a geordie, this will make you look weak to them.
  4. Learn how to acknowledge and (when you're ready) perform a geordie nod. This will require you to raise your head and eyebrows slightly whilst muttering "alreet".
  5. Very important. Newcastle's inhabitants are very friendly. This is a good thing EXCEPT in your first week. It will take you about a week of settling in before you will be able to understand the accent. In this week people WILL speak to you and you will NOT understand. Rule five: No eye contact with locals in week one.
